Organic Inspector – Staff Position

Job Description

Primary responsibilities include conducting annual, additional, and unannounced inspections of certified organic operations. Planning and organizing logistics of on-site inspections of assigned clients within a specified time frame. Assessing compliance of operations with the USDA National Organic Program regulations and applicable international requirements. Educating clients on the organic certification process, rules, regulations, and guidelines. Writing reports and communicating inspection results through excellent written and oral communication within established timelines. Working within a team for training, collaboration, and development of internal systems. 

This position takes about a year to fully master, so only apply if you are making a multi-year commitment. 

Location

The ideal candidate lives in or near a travel hub in the Nebraska, Colorado, or Missouri area. However, other locations will be considered.

Our office is headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska and our employees work remotely from seven different states. Applicants must be living in and eligible to work in the USA.

Qualifications

Required

B.S. or B.A. degree or higher and/or comparable experience in related fields such as agriculture, natural resources, food science, chemistry, law, accounting, food processing, quality assurance, or similar.

  • Competency with email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other computer applications.
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively. 
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.  
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex technical information in a positive and effective way. 
  • Ability to logically solve problems under pressure.  
  • Ability to work with people of various cultural backgrounds and languages.  
  • Ability to multitask in a busy environment.  
  • Valid driver’s license with an excellent driving record. 
  • Ability to travel extensively within the US, approximately 70% of the time. 
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours as needed. 

Desired

  • Experience with organic regulations or organic industry.
  • Experience conducting organic inspections.
  • Completed relevant Organic Integrity Learning Center (OILC) courses. 
  • Interest in building a career in the organic industry:  OneCert will provide training to an individual with limited experience but great potential in the organic certification industry.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience. Typical introductory level is $45,000-50,000 annually.

Organic Certification Specialist

Job Description

The Certification Specialist is responsible for meticulously evaluating applications and inspection reports submitted by both new applicants and existing operations seeking certification. The Specialist is responsible for assessing compliance with the regulations outlined in the USDA National Organic Program and relevant international standards. For Producers, this involves a comprehensive review of various elements, including but not limited to seed quality, field history, fertility practices, inputs, weed control methods, production techniques, pest control plans, and audit trail documentation. For handing applicants, this includes review of labels, product formulations, ingredient suppliers, food additives, production methods, equipment sanitation procedures, facility pest control plans, and audit trail documentation. Additionally, Certification Specialists engage in effective communication through various channels such as phone and email, and utilizing reference materials as needed. Decisions and outcomes are conveyed through formal letters and notices. Furthermore, there may be opportunities for the Specialist to participate in and conduct organic inspections.
